Since the beginnings of photography and the moving
image, people have always recorded the lives of others around them.
These photographic images of actual lives were taken
and used for different purposes.
Entertainment, newsreel, business and radical use of
these images grew as the genre developed.
But how did it all begin and what were the origins and
uses of the social documentary film?
